The sewer lord has been dismissed as an old wives’ tale for centuries, but the great worms- for there are in fact many “lords” still glide through the unlit waters of the deepest and most ancient sewers of the capital.
The lords have been wary of humans for many centuries. Their peculiar lure, able to mimic a human face in both colour and texture, was too successful in drawing their favourite meat down into the depths for it began to draw down royal paladins in equal measure- golden armoured would-be heroes eager to slay what was rumoured to be a fell water dragon living below their sacred city.
The wiser worms that survived still make use of their lures, but now to parlay and discourage foolhardy humans from exploring the inundated catacombs they call home, lest the hunger of one of their sister worms be too great to resist, and they draw the burning golden blades down into their dark abodes once again.
The worms are victim to their own longevity and prodigious memory in this regard, as a missing urchin or vagabond would hardly be noticed in the sprawling city in days of late, and the royal paladins of old are a remembered more in the hearts of the great worms than those of the men and women in the streets above.
